Dell Mini 10v Hackintosh Upgraded to Mac OS X 10.6.7

I’ve just updated my Dell Mini 10v hackintosh netbook to Mac OS X 10.6.7. It was a simple process.

Run the Netbook Installer and restart.
Download the Mac OS X 10.6.7 Update dmg file from the Apple support site.
Run the update in the dmg file.
Restart and all done.

I ran Software Update after the restart to get the latest version iTunes and Safari.

After 1 year and 8 months, my Dell Mini 10v hackintosh is still running strong. However, I only use it mainly for Skype video chat. For all the other stuff I used to do on my Dell Mini 10v hackintosh netbook, I’m using my iPad 1st Gen.

Upgrading My Dell Mini 10v Hackintosh Netbook to Mac OS X 10.6.5

My Mini 10v hackintosh was running 10.6.3 before the upgrade. The upgrade was a simple process of following the instructions from http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/general-mac-os-x-discussion/21481-official-mac-os-x-10-6-4-update-thread.html.

Download and run NetbookInstaller
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.4 Combo Update
Restart Dell Mini 10v

To update the hackintosh laptop from Mac OS X 10.6.4 to Mac OS X 10.6.5

Run NetbookInstaller again
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.5 Combo Update
Restart Dell Mini 10v

That’s it. My Dell Mini 10v is now running Mac OS X 10.6.5.

It’s been more than 6 months since I wrote anything in this blog. Nothing much happened with my Dell Mini 10v hackintosh netbook during this past 6 months. The iPad has replaced the hackintosh netbook for casual web browsing and reading ebooks. The netbook only comes into action when I need to use Skype with video chat.

In the past 6 months, Mac OS X 10.6.4 and 10.6.5 has been released. I’m still running Mac OS X 10.6.3 on the Dell Mini 10v hackintosh netbook because it works and I don’t want to break anything. Since I have some free time this weekend, I will attempt to upgrade the Dell Mini 10v to 10.6.5.

I will update this blog after my Dell Mini 10v is updated to Mac OS X 10.6.5.

Will an iPad replace my Dell Mini 10v hackintosh laptop? I asked my dad to get me an iPad during his trip to the US. He managed to buy a unit at the Apple Store and the iPad is with him at the moment. He’s still holiday-ing over there.

I’ll get it when he comes back to Malaysia sometime next week.

Since I use my hackintosh Dell Mini 10v mostly for surfing the net, viewing digital comics and reading ebooks on my bed; I think the iPad will be a great replacement for the netbook.

Will write more once I get my hands on the iPad in 10 days time.

My Dell Mini 10v hackintosh netbook has been updated to Mac OS X 10.6.3. Everything works without any issue. If you’re planning to make the leap to 10.6.3, remember to imstall NetbookInstaller 0.8.4RC1 first before running Software Update. If you face any problems, you can ask for help from the Mac OS X discussion forums on MyDellMini.com.

Running Google Chrome OS on the Dell Mini 10v

I found this Google Chrome OS on a Dell Mini 10v youtube video today. Found it just after the announcement by Google on their Google Chrome OS project.

From what I read about Google Chrome OS so far, it’s a totally online web-focused OS. It uses the Chrome web browser as the user interface and main application. And all it does is run web applications on a computer?

If I can find a binary build of Google Chrome OS, I may try it out on my Dell Mini 10v. Anyone know where I can find a binary build of Chrome OS for the Dell Mini 10v?

Dell Mini 10v Hackintosh Updated to Snow Leopard 10.6.2

Just finished updating my hackintosh Dell Mini 10v to Snow Leopard 10.6.2.

The Intel Atom CPU is now reported as a 1.67 GHz Intel Core Solo Processor. The processor used to be listed as 1.67 GHz Unknown in Snow Leopard 10.6.1.

Sound didn’t work after the upgrade on the first reboot. I ran NetBookInstaller 8.3RC4 again and rebooted. Sound came back after the reboot.

Are you gonna update to Snow Leopard 10.6.2 too? Get the steps here.

A Beginners Guide to Installing Mac OS X Snow Leopard on the Dell Mini 10v

If you’re a Dell Mini 10v owner standing on the edge, looking into the turbulent waters of installing Snow Leopard on your netbook, I have good news for you. Gizmodo has come up with a step-by-step guide with lots of hand-holding to help you leap into the world of hackintosh laptops.

You only need 3 big steps to install Snow Leopard 10.6.1 on the Dell Mini 10v hackintosh.

Prepare a USB Flash Drive with Mac OS X Retail and Netbook BootMaker.
Install OS X.
Run Software Update to get Mac OS X 10.6.1 or above.

If this is your first hackintosh installation, you probably need mini-steps instead of 3 big steps. There are 19 steps in all in the Gizmodo guide, get it from Gizmodo: How to hackintosh a Dell Mini 10v into the Ultimate Snow Leopard netbook.

You’ve got yourself a fully-functioning, beautifully small Snow Leopard netbook, which’ll do 90% of what a 13-inch MacBook can, at 70% the size and about 25% of the cost. Mine’s close to perfect: With an extended battery, I’m pushing 7 hours of battery life with Wi-Fi, which makes my MacBook pro look like a LOSER. And tiny extra bit of size over the Mini 9 means the keyboard is just large enough to work on, meaning this thing isn’t just a toy—it’s a decent investment. This from a guy with banana fingers.

Performance is acceptable, meaning you can run regular apps like iTunes, Firefox—and even Photoshop in a bind.
