I had the same problem when I connected my Dell Mini 9 to a screen projector and turned on mirroring. What I had to do to turn off mirroring was:

1. Open Terminal app
2. sudo -s
3. Type in your password (leave cursor in terminal window)
4. plug your external monitor
5. /Extra/bin/mirroring off

THis restored my displays.

Search: Fabian Canas mirror.

Installed that and all is well.

I can now turn off mirroring

AAARRRRGH !!!!

When I reboot without recovery , it’s still the same….

Any solution ?

I could not boot to a viewable screen – all purple and stripes.- for the same reason.

Is there any way to recover I asked myself ??

I tried recovery=Y on booting and it worked

Standard screen back again

It’s a pain in the behind into which I had gotten myself last week.
Turns out that you can’t see the checkbox when you don’t have an external monitor connected (that’s computer “intelligence” for you), and of course you can’t see it when the monitor is attached either, because mirroring doesn’t work with the Hackintosh.

Turns out there is a tool on your Hackintosh that allows you to turn mirror off.
Type the following in a terminal window: /Extra/bin/mirroring off
Then connect the external monitor before hitting enter.

i’ve resolved the problem. i just approximated where the check box was before plugging in the display and clicked in that area until i unchecked it once i had plugged it in. worked.

but yes, mirror mode will make your displays go haywire

i accidentally selected mirror mode on my external display and both screens went crazy…lines and colors with no clarity. how can i reset the external display to not be in mirror mode? every time i plug it in now it defaults to mirror mode and crashes the displays…
